Teen Urban Tree Corps 2021

We are excited to announce that we are now accepting applications to our Teen Urban Tree Corps program for the summer of 2021!

This summer, our (paid!) 6-week program will expand to provide workforce development opportunities for Boston teens (15-18). Through various trips and activities, teens will gain skills in urban forestry and learn about the importance of urban trees and how to plant, care for, and advocate for them. Teens will also make connections in urban forestry and related fields. As a final project, teens will develop a tree planting plan in their community based on what they learned in the program. We are hopeful for a largely in person program this summer but are planning for all formats. You can download a full job description here.

Our love of Boston's trees was too much for us to just celebrate in one day. So we've decided to celebrate trees all week for ArborWeek! Stay tuned as we share out our week of tree loving, speaking, learning, appreciating, and sharing events from April 26th to May 2nd. Here's a little sneak peak of what you have to look forward to:

Tree Giveaway

We have 900 seedlings to give away! We'll be distributing Fraiser fir, Persimmon, Sweetgum, Bur Oak and White Oak. Stay tuned for sites and partners where you can pickup your own seedling the week of April 26th. Are you a community group or organization interested in helping distribute? Meet our events and outreach intern, Ricardo Chino

We're thrilled to have Ricardo Chino join us this semester from Brandeis University as our ArborWeek Event Coordinator. Ricardo grew up in Southampton, New York, a suburban area on Long Island with beautiful trees, plants and beaches. He has come to appreciate the beauty of nature through work in landscaping with his father and exploring the views and scenery of the Island. Ricardo is a senior at Brandeis University majoring in Environmental Studies and Hispanic studies. As a native speaker of Spanish, cultural identity is important to him and he is excited to bring his language and cultural skills to help in outreach with the Latino community of Boston and encourage their participation and collaboration with Speak for the Trees. Ricardo is excited to be part of the team and learn more about the urban tree canopy and environmental justice in and to help organize future events for Speak for the Trees.

Green Infrastructure, Climate, and Cities Seminar Series

Check out this fantastic seminar on urban heat from the Consortium for Climate Risk in the Urban Northeast at NOAA. In this seminar, speakers Dr. Patricia Fabian and Dr. Madeleine Scammell of the Boston University School of Public Health, and Roseann Bongiovanni, Executive Director of one of our favorite EJ orgs in Boston, GreenRoots, will discuss C-HEAT, a study on urban heat and heat exposure that is based in Chelsea and East Boston.
