November Gratitude and Thanks from Speak for the Trees

GivingTuesday is Around the Corner!

Since our founding, our work has been nurtured by the generosity of a strong community of donors. Thanks to all of our supporters, we are able to expand and deepen our work throughout Boston, bringing the joy and benefits of trees to residents in neighborhoods where they're most needed.

This year, our GivingTuesday goal is to welcome at least 20 new donors to our 2023 list of supporters.

You can help us reach our goal by becoming a donor or by sharing our work and mission with friends, family, and neighbors. We’ve made it super easy for you to forward this email to those you know to ask them to give on #GivingTuesday so that we, together, can grow Boston’s urban forest.

From all of us at Speak for the Trees, we hope you have a restful and rejuvenating Thanksgiving.

Celebrating Success Together

Our end-of-year celebration on Monday, November 13, was a truly TREE-mendous success! We joined with an enthusiastic group supporters to share a recap of our 2023 successes and events, while incorporating a fun game of TREE-via (tree trivia). We were thrilled to spend the evening with everyone who attended, contributed, and celebrated with us. A huge thank you to Happsy for supporting this event and to our friends at Dorchester Brewing Company for hosting us.

We look forward to growing more memories with you in 2024.

3 Tree Plantings... Just Last Week!

Partnering with the Boston Tree Alliance

On Saturday, November 4, we partnered with the newly formed Boston Tree Alliance and Habitat for Humanity Boston for the Alliance’s first tree planting on private residential land. We planted three bare-root trees on private property in Mission Hill. Alongside residents of the new property, we planted a Red Maple, a Green Hawthorne, and a Shadbush. We look forward to planting more trees with the Boston Tree Alliance in 2024!

Taking Flight for a Greener Community

We partnered with Delta Air Lines to plant 11 Red Maple bare-root trees in Harambee Park on Tuesday, November 14. This addition complements the 49 other trees that SFTT has planted and cares for in the park. A heartfelt thanks to Delta Air Lines and their amazing dozen volunteers for their valuable contribution to the green spaces in our community. Together, we are making strides in cultivating a greener, healthier Boston for all.

Planting Shade Trees at Roxbury Community College

On Thursday November 16, our staff worked as a team to plant seven shade trees in a high-impact location at Roxbury Community College alongside Columbus Ave. The Facilities Manager, Shami Qazi, helped us find the perfect location for four Swamp White Oak trees and three Red Maple trees, where they’ll have plenty of room to grow and will shade a very hot sidewalk that is highly used by the students and faculty.

Congrats to our Summer GIS Fellow, Chad Fisher

Over the summer Chad Fisher, our Tufts University Tisch GIS Fellow, improved and expanded our Tree Equity maps. He's now been selected as a finalist for 2023 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition.

This year’s theme challenged storytellers to create stories about conserving our planet. Esri and IUCN will announce the 2023 ArcGIS StoryMaps Competition WINNERS on December 7, 2023
