Summer in Full Swing

Our recent Teen Urban Tree Corps (TUTC) Summit and Boston Urban Forest Friends (BUFF) Symposium were both successes. If you missed the events, you can read more about them in our blog posts. Summer is a busy season for us, and with the arrival of our Summer TUTC members last week, our office is as busy as ever. Today and over the rest of the program we'll be sharing with you all their great work.

2023 Summer Teen Urban Tree Corps Begins with a Tree Planting

We are thrilled to welcome a new cohort of participants to this year's Teen Urban Tree Corps Program! We have 22 youth from across the city working to water and care for street trees across Dorchester this summer.

During the first week the teens had the opportunity to plant 10 trees at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Dorchester - a session led by Claire Corcoran, our Community Tree Specialist. This is the first summer that the teens have had the opportunity to plant trees, as the weather in late June is usually too hot and dry. The rainy weather this summer enabled us to hold out for a couple of weeks so that this summer's teens had the chance to plant trees together.

In addition to watering and mulching street trees, the teens will spend the next four weeks learning about tree identification, removing invasive species, and understanding the important role that trees play in building strong, healthy, and vibrant communities. They will also have the opportunity to learn about careers in urban forestry through educational field trips to the Arnold Arboretum, Mount Auburn Cemetery, Harvard Forest, and more!

The teens are joined in their endeavors by our four wonderful Team Leaders—former TUTC participant Anna Wilcox, last fall's College for Social Innovation Fellow, Victoria Leda, PowerCorps graduate D'andre Green, and Celie Hudson—a Speak for the Trees newcomer. Leading the program are Education Coordinator Josh Reed and Program Leader Jamila DePeiza-Kern, who was a Team Leader last summer.

Stay tuned for more updates about what the TUTC participants are doing and learning in future newsletters.

Speak for the Trees is partnering with Buffalo Exchange "Tokens for Bags"

Speak for the Trees is happy to announce that we have been selected as a recipient of the Buffalo Exchange Tokens for Bags® program from July through December 2023. You can now donate to Speak for the Trees just by shopping at Buffalo Exchange in Davis Square. Instead of a plastic bag, the Tokens for Bags® program offers every customer who makes a purchase one “token” valued at five cents (the cost to produce a bag) to donate to one of several local charities selected by the store. The program has generated over $926,025 for hundreds of local nonprofit organizations since 1994 and has saved over 18.5 million plastic bags from the landfill.

Congratulations Jerel!

Our Community Outreach Manager, Jerel Ferguson, received a Certificate of Recognition from the Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation, for his support in improving the quality of life in the greater Codman Square community. Speak for the Trees has partnered with the CSNDC as part of the EPA’s Environmental Justice Small Grants Program. Through this EPA grant, Speak for the Trees has engaged with, learned from, and educated local residents about community forestry as a tool towards climate resilience, clean air, and healthy neighborhoods. Marilyn Forman, Director of Community Organizing and Resident Engagement (CORE), and James Mackey, Director of Brothers Building, recommended that Jerel receive this honor.

Look for Our New Watering Truck

Keep your eyes open for our new watering truck! It has been making its rounds around the streets of Boston caring for various street trees and park trees that we have planted. You can catch a glimpse of it and our Tree Care Associate, Mekhi Edge, watering in various locations: East Boston Memorial Stadium, Noyes playground, and Brooke Charter School are some of the many places the truck can be spotted. Harambee Park, Fitzgerald Park, and Loesch Park are also some of the local parks that the truck will be at. Give him a wave if you see him riding around.
