Cartography Corner:
Tree Canopy and Environmental Justice Map

We often use the phrase "Environmental Justice" in our work. But what defines an Environmental Justice Community?

Our summer Geo-Spatial Analysis Fellow, Chad Fisher, created a map that highlights the different environmental justice communities in Boston, as defined by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Oftentimes, these communities have a lower tree canopy coverage. This tool helps us identify areas where we aim to engagewith the community and plant trees. It's also a map that helps folks understand our work and the relationship between people and trees.

You can take a closer look at this map as well as the many others that Chad created on our website. We have made many more updates to the Tree Equity page on our website. Check it out and let us know what you think.

Hiring Teens for our School Year Teen Urban Tree Corps Program

During the 2023-24 school year, we are continuing to provide paid work opportunities for Boston youth ages 14-18. The program runs from mid-September to mid-June (exact dates TBD), Monday-Thursday from 4pm to 6pm at our offices in Fields Corner, Dorchester. The teens are required to attend at least twice per week.

Participants will care for trees, create educational resources and social media content, participate in outreach activities, and assist in the planning and hosting of our second annual Teen Tree Summit in the spring!

Read more about the position and apply today. And, please share this opportunity with young folks you know!

A BIG Thank You to our Two Summer Interns

For the past 10 weeks we've had two amazing interns join our team. As you may have noticed, our website is looking that much spiffier, our programs are running that much more smoothly, and our newsletters and social media are that much more engaging! (Among many, many other things.)

A big thank you to Nora Kelly and Hannah Axtell (second and third from the right side in the image) for their creativity and hard work this summer. They'll be missed! But, we also know that they'll be back to help us in watering, planting, and celebrating.
