The fil m\, Plants Through the Pavement: Green Space Inequity in Boston\, ex plores the concept of urban wilding\; the history\, preservation\, and fut ure promotion of forestlands\, gardens\, and other natural spaces within th e urban environment. Environmental justice\, ecological impact\, and our h uman connection to the natural world are at the core of this creative and i nspiring film.
The film will premiere via Zoom Webinar for one night only: Thursday\, February 16th\, at 7:00pm. The webinar will include introd uctions by teachers and student speakers along with the film and there will be a Q&A with student filmmakers afterward. The event is free however adva nce registration is required.
This documentary has been five mont hs in the making. The Class of 2023 were responsible for all stages of the process from initial creative planning to filming to post-production. In De cember\, all 36 members of the class traveled to Boston to interview commun ity organizers\, academics\, landscape architects and city officials. This fieldwork then became the basis for the film you’ll see on Thursday. We h ope you can make it.

This is a self-led walk/roll where you choo se your own route and get to know and share the trees in your neighborhood. Individuals sign up to walk/roll as many miles as they can throughout Arbo rWeek\, and ask friends and neighbors to pledge for every mile. Individuals can also join together to create teams\; make a team of 5+ members\, and w e’ll send each participant a free Speak for the Trees hat! Anyone can join in the fun\, and all proceeds will go towards celebrating\, planting\, and caring for trees in Boston. Forest Bathing\, inspired by the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku\, is a restorative sensory explor ation that supports health and healing for all beings. From increased cereb ral blood flow to stronger immune defenses\, come discover for yourself wha t happens when we unplug\, slow down and open our senses to notice more of our natural surroundings. Forest Bathing is part of a global effort to tend to the stressful conditions of living in modern industrialized civilizatio n. All the prompts\, invitations\, sharing and ways of participating are op tional and open to interpretation.
This program is geared towards adu lts (18+) and has a cap of 15 participants. Registration is required. A don ation to help cover costs is not required for participation but would be ap preciated. Suggested amount: $20.
Tam Willey (they/them) is a certifi ed forest therapy guide\, trainer\, mentor and teacher with the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy and is the founder of “Toadstool Walks\,” a g uiding practice based in Boston\, Massachusetts. Tam has guided Forest Ther apy in collaboration with The Arnold Arboretum\, The Emerald Necklace Conse rvancy\, Mass Audubon\, Boston Harbor Now\, Peabody Essex Museum\, Lesley U niversity Holistic Psychology and Wellness\, Boston University School Of Th eology\, and more. Rob Riman p assed his youth roaming Lake Michigan’s upland ravines and paddling nearby tributary headwaters of the Mississippi. Following studies in geology\, and a decade leading remote expeditions across North America\, from alpine hei ghts to coastal backwaters\, he entered his current urban phase\, first bui lding traditional wooden boats with youth in NYC\, later pursuing graduate work in architecture and sustainable design\, and leading to his co-foundin g of the local nonprofit Home Energy Efficiency Team (HEET). Today\, he del ights in his various roles as a freelance naturalist and place-sourced educ ator\, embracing landful living practices\, while working to decolonize his own learning. Homeschool dad to two semi-feral children and avid forager\, Rob resides along the former shoreline of the Quinobequin’s impounded estu ary\, on traditional territory of the Massachusett\, Pawtucket and Naumkeag people.

Boston-based artist Jane D. M arsching creates interdisciplinary\, research-based\, experimental projects that foster an experience of wonder and invite us to communicate with the beings we live with. She exhibits internationally and is the recipient of a wards\, fellowships\, and residencies nationally. As a Professor at MassArt \, she is Director of the Sustainability Minor and founder of the MassArt R esilient Pigment Library.
Black Cherry has self-seeded in the urban w ild of Bussey Brook Meadow at the Arnold Arboretum. Participants will gathe r by the expansive Black Cherry and participate in sensory movement prompts . Then\, participants will process and reflect through drawing and writing with ink made from Black Cherry. By the end of the session\, participants w ill generate their own oracle card (an image and text-based tool for intuit ion and divination)\, guided by the ecology and life of Black Cherry. Tam Willey (they/them) is a c ertified forest therapy guide\, trainer\, mentor and teacher with the Assoc iation of Nature and Forest Therapy and is the founder of “Toadstool Walks\ ,” a guiding practice based in Boston\, Massachusetts. Tam has guided Fores t Therapy in collaboration with The Arnold Arboretum\, The Emerald Necklace Conservancy\, Mass Audubon\, Boston Harbor Now\, Peabody Essex Museum\, Le sley University Holistic Psychology and Wellness\, Boston University School Of Theology\, and more. We are excited to collaborate with New England Black Circus to bring a very special aerial silks performance to the Codman Square Farmers Market. Come join us for a community summer ce lebration! Featuring three aerial silks artists (including one of our own s taff!) on a 17 foot high rig\, the performance celebrates the Stone Circle Bench created by Ekene Ijeoma in partnership with the Boston Public Arts Tr iennial.
Vendors will be present from 11-2PM\, and aerial performance s will take place from 11:30 to 1:30PM.
We will also have a craft tab le where you can make your very own watercolor flower pressings! This craft is so much fun for both kids and adults. Come home with a framed piece of artwork made from natural materials.
The event is free to attend and family-friendly.

At Speak for the Trees\, we distribute young\, resilient tree s that will thrive in our city. By planting a tree\, you become part of a m ovement to transform Boston into a greener\, more equitable city. At these events\, every resident has the chance to contribute to the health of Bosto n’s tree canopy.
Trees will be given out to pre-registered and walk-u p attendees on a first come first served basis. Trees are given in containe rs that weigh about 40 pounds and can be 5-8 ft tall. Recipients will need to bring a vehicle large enough to transport the tree away from the site.

The event wi ll take place on Saturday\, April 11th\, from 1 pm - 5 pm at First Parish D orchester. The event will feature various collaborative art projects\, hand s-on activities\, discussions on youth advocacy\, and tabling by our partne rs and other groups.
