During this hot summer of drought, our trees need your help
Our teens are doing their part - can you help?
You can help by watering your local trees

This week has been hot, for sure. But the entire spring has been dry. Our trees could use your help. The city of Boston has instructions on how you can help by watering your local street tree. Or, watch a video by our friends at Casey Trees in DC on how you can water your tree.

Even in this heat, 15 teens in our Teen Urban Tree Corps are out watering trees

Weeks 1 and 2 of our summer Teen Urban Tree Corps program

Speak for the Trees' TUTC teens have been off to a great start watering Dorchester's Street trees. These trees have been so appreciative of the care, love, and attention that they deserve. We wanted to applaud their amazing work and also thank all our partners and funders in supporting their work. The teens' work helps these trees thrive and grow, allowing them to provide shade for generations to come.

Teens began their summer with various training sessions that included tree ID, safe fire hydrant use, tree biology, and tree care. These first two weeks have also included field trips that have provided them with hands-on educational opportunities on a variety of topics. The teens were introduced to a diversity of tree species at Arnold Arboretum, got to practice identifying trees at the Boston Common, and were introduced to tree maintenance and care at Post Office Square Park. We look forward to the continued expansion of their knowledge and experiences as the summer continues!

Thank You Natalie

As Natalie's time with us as Community Engagement Coordinator and TerraCorps Member is coming to an end, we'd like her to know how grateful we are for all the work she's done for Speak for the Trees and Boston's urban forest.

Natalie has contributed to many projects and causes. These include creating videos with local community members about their tree stories, contributing to the advocacy of the trees on Melnea Cass Blvd, and running Boston Urban Forest Friends (BUFF) meetings.

We, including Boston's trees, would like to thank Natalie for her contributions towards a more equitable Boston and wish her the best of luck in her studies at the University of Utah to become an environmental lawyer.

Community Tree Stories: Exploring Healthy Environments in Three Boston EJ Neighborhoods

On Wednesday, July 13th Speak for the Trees hosted its first community meeting with Codman Square Neighborhood Development Corporation (CSNDC) The conversation focused on preparing members of the community for Tree Stories and Tree Walks, a project funded by the EPA. The meeting was open to the public and 16 people attended. During the meeting, attendees shared stories, thoughts, and opinions about trees, and asked great questions.

Cara Solomon of Everyday Boston, facilitated the story telling/sharing workshop and presented a very thoughtful and intentional Q&A, to get attendees comfortable talking to each other. Many of the community members knew each other and engaged with each other easily. This meeting was the first of three, and it was great to have members engaged, excited and encouraged to learn more about trees in their community.

This EPA-funded project, Community Tree Stories, is in partnership with three community-based organizations as well as EmVision, Everyday Boston, Boston University’s URBAN program, and American Forests. Together, these partners will co-develop a series of community tree walks in three EJ neighborhoods of Boston - Mattapan, Dorchester, and East Boston, — for residents, municipal officials, and researchers to explore and deepen their understanding of the intersections of Environmental Justice, clean air, and tree canopy cover. We hope you can join us in future meetings and walks!
