Leafing October behind...

It's almost November and the leaves are turning. We have been loving leaf peeping and seeing the different colors of autumn throughout the city.

Speak for the Trees has had quite a few events in the past weeks - including a tree giveaway in Roxbury and a planting in East Boston - and we are looking forward to all that's in store few weeks.

A Dawn Redwood finds a home at the  Murphy School in Dorchester

Students from the Murphy School in Dorchester were joined by Mayor Wu and members of the PowerCorps program to plant a Dawn Redwood tree - gifted by the Arnold Arboretum. This is one of 10 dawn redwoods that will be planted throughout the city in the coming weeks.

East Boston Tree Planting

On October 23rd, volunteers from Speak for the Trees, Tree Eastie, and Temple Ohabei Shalom planted 9 trees at the Chevrus School apartments to commemorate Temple Ohabei's 180th Anniversary. The trees were chosen to beautify the grounds, shade the sidewalk, and filter air pollution and were the second installment of plantings in East Boston. In the spring 9 Magnolia trees were planted by the Boys and Girls Club in East Boston.

Codman Academy Opens Microforest

Codman Academy in Dorchester opened up its "Healing Microforest" on October 25th. This space was once a vacant lot but partnership between the Mayor's office and Codman's K1 class has allowed for its transformation into a living learning environment for students, providing a space for reflection, healing, and wonder. The forest was funded in part by funds provided by Speak for the Trees, the Fish Family Foundation, and the Pat Cooke Foundation.

Learn about trees in your yard at a November 14th Workshop

Wondering what you could be doing to keep your trees healthy? When to call an arborist, and how they can help? What to do if you’re concerned that a tree is threatening your house? How trees contribute to your family’s comfort and well-being and your home’s value? Join the virtual educational workshop presented by Lexington Living Landscapes and Cary Memorial Library with arborists Stephen Vernon and Greg Mosman to discuss what every homeowner should know about their trees. If you have trees on your property, or are thinking of planting one, this program is for you.

Thank you funders

Last week we were awarded a grant from the Mabel Louise Riley Foundation to support our work in piloting a yard tree program in EJ neighborhoods. In the coming months we will be developing material and reaching out to residents. Stay tuned!

We also received a Health Justice Partnership & Grant this from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts and a generous donation from the Beker Family Foundation to support our work and grow our capacity.

Thank you to all our sponsors and donors who are helping grow Boston's urban forest.
