Staying Rooted Together

The past several weeks have been a head spinning series of executive actions at the federal level. Many of us feel disoriented, angry, scared, and confused.  These are uncertain times.

At Speak for the Trees we too are feeling the effects of some of these executive directives. For example, much of our funding for the next three years (nearly 40%) comes from federal grants from the US Forest Service. Right now these funds are being paused, but we're told that the money should be flowing again soon. Honestly, no one knows. And, although our immediate finances are strong, this uncertainty is forcing us to examine our long-term strategies and develop alternative plans for the years ahead. We are also seeing an attempt to scrub and dismiss language and projects focused on environmental justice and diversity, equity, and inclusion - values that are central to our mission.

We also know, however, that our communities are strong and resilient. Our values of belonging, healing, and mutual support are deeply rooted in the DNA of our mission and work. They anchor us in the work and inspire us to act. And, although we are sometimes scared and uncertain, at other times we are energized by the fact that our work is now more important than ever. We, alongside you, our partners, are being called at this moment to doubly commit to growing hope, resilience, and justice together. Together, we stay rooted.

This temporary, 8-10 week summer position is paid at $20/hr for 30 hours weekly. Team Leaders will work nine weeks from mid-June to mid-August; the exact dates are TBD. Board Updates:
Welcome and a Found Farewell

Speak for the Trees is excited to welcome Davo Jefferson to its Board of Directors. Davo is the Executive Director of PowerCorps Boston - a 10-month Green Industry Workforce Development Program that provides young adults with workforce development and training in the green industry. Davo has been leading the program since its launch in 2022. During that time, we’ve had the pleasure of working closely with Davo and his team and are thrilled to have his expertise, passion, and insight to help guide our work.

At the same time, we are also bidding fond farewell to Danielle Kaplan. Danielle has been on the board for over three years and during that time she helped develop reporting systems, governance structures, and so much more. She recently relocated to Seattle, WA, and her new job (and the 3-hour time difference!) have made regular attendance increasingly challenging. Thank you for all of your support, Danielle!

Join our Community Meeting for Tree Planting Locations

Join us on Thursday, February 27, 2025, from 3pm-7pm, at the Boston Nature Center for a community meeting to discuss plans for planting more trees at Mt. Hope Cemetery this spring. Speak for the Trees and American Forests are working to expand tree planting efforts, and we invite members of the Mt. Hope Canterbury Association—who we partnered with in the fall—to help shape the next phase of this project. A nearby meeting space ensures both SFTT and community members can collaborate effectively. Come share your thoughts and be part of this important greening initiative!

Supporting California Urban Forestry

The fires in LA have devastated the communities there. Our partners at Amigo de Los Rios have been hit especially hard! Please join us in supporting this amazing urban tree nonprofit.

Claire Robinson is the Founder and Managing Director of Amigos de los Ríos, a community-based organization working to create a natural infrastructure network of green spaces, green schools, parks, and trails throughout under-served communities in the Los Angeles Basin. Amigos de los Rios lost their office to the fire, and Claire also lost her home. The Amigos de los Rios board created a GoFundMe to support Claire and her team and to help their organization get back to operating as soon as they can. Please support the Amigos de los Rios team or share their GoFundMe page with your networks.
