Partnering with the Boston Tree Alliance

We are proud to announce that we have received a grant from the Boston Tree Alliance to support our work to plant trees on privately owned property in the Tree Alliance’s priority neighborhoods. This project will complement our NeighborWoods yard-tree program.

The Boston Tree Alliance is a coalition of nonprofits, community-based organizations, and others convened by Mass Audubon under the direction of the City of Boston. These groups work collaboratively to grow Boston’s urban forest with a focus on increasing equity. Speak for the Trees is a member of the Tree Alliance and now proud a grantee.

We’re Hiring! Tree Care Associate

We're seeking a Tree Care Associate to help water and care for trees throughout the city. This is an exciting opportunity to work outdoors in the community, building and sustaining Boston's urban forest. The Tree Care Associate will drive our pickup truck outfitted with a watering tank and pump. As needed, they will also assist at tree planting and giveaway events. In addition to caring for trees, they will maintain the condition, organization, and inventory of the organization’s tools and equipment.

Speak for the Trees x Emerson College: “Compassion and Awe: Using Storytelling for Environmental Action”

Speak for the Trees has partnered with Emerson College during the Spring semester in the course “Behavioral Economics,” where students propose interventions that will change people’s behavior relating to urban trees. There will be an end-of-semester event at Franklin Park Zoo on Friday, April 19, from 12:00 p.m.- 2:00 p.m. where we will explore ways that storytelling can inspire us toward environmental action. Look through the eyes of animals as they navigate our shared environment, explore how human stories can deepen our care for trees, and help envision what environmental justice can look like in Boston. Featuring family-friendly live performances, interactive discussions and activities, a picnic lunch, and more! Registration includes free admission to explore the Zoo following the event. Be sure to register early, as tickets are limited.

Eat, Plant, and Recycle Your Way to Supporting our Work

Every month Big Dipper Hospitality Group selects a “Round Up” partner.  When people check out they can "round up" their transaction to the nearest whole dollar and the change gets donated to a charitable organization.  This year Big Dipper Hospitality Group is selecting partners through a DEI lens as well as selecting organizations with ties to the month being celebrated. We are proud to have been selected for April for the work we do nurturing the earth work and our focus on social action and equity. Support our work today by visiting one of their restaurants in this group in Boston, Brookline, or Cambridge, including State Park and Mamaleh's Delicatessen.

For every referral received by their clients, Blade of Grass will be making a donation to Speak for the Trees to express gratitude, do good, and contribute to the tree plantings in Boston. Blade of Grass offers a variety of services including award-winning landscape design, installation, and maintenance throughout Boston and the Boston Metro West area. We’re proud to share in their passion for urban nature and beauty. Together, we look forward to volunteering and nurturing trees in the years ahead.

We are thrilled to be partnering with Re-Fleece Market, a company that believes in keeping things longer, fixing and repairing items, buying used when possible, and reusing the materials in an item at the end of its useful life. Re-Fleece is creating a less disposable world, embedded in a healthy economy that thrives on re-use. Sellers are provided the opportunity to donate a portion of the sale of their items to an affiliated environmental nonprofit organization, including Speak for the Trees. So clean out your closet today and help us grow Boston’s urban forest.

Good News About a 150-Year-Old Oak Tree at 72 Hyde Park Ave in Jamaica Plain!
New architectural plans have been filed that appear to maintain the tree AND build new housing!

From your neighbors in JP: Matt, Caterina, and Ken:

As you may recall, back in September 2023 a group of residents (including some of you!) took action to hold MIR Reality to their commitment to preserve the 150-year-old oak tree at 72 Hyde Park Ave in Jamaica Plain. Because of your emails (over 230!) to the BPDA, the developer was forced to resubmit plans that accommodated this treasured tree. On Friday we received a copy (see screenshot below) of these new plans from the city that show the preservation of the tree.

This means that our dual goals of preserving the tree AND building new, high-density housing are likely to be achieved!

OUR NEXT STEP: Now, it is time to sprint through the finish and ensure these proposed plans do in fact commit MIR Realty to maintain the tree - AND that the plans are approved by the Zoning Board of Appeals.

If you are able to attend this critical BPDA meeting on Tuesday, April 30th at 11:00am to express your support and to be witnesses of the developer’s promises, please add your name to this Google Doc.

Thank you so much for your continued support. Together we are on the verge of positivity impacting our community in a way that will last generations to come!

The dotted green circle on the right is the tree we are preserving.
