Hello Forest Friends,
We are currently taking some time to reflect on the future of Boston Urban Forest Friends (BUFF). We are thinking carefully about the program’s direction, how it serves our members, and what makes the most sense moving forward.
No final decisions have been made yet, but we are considering all possibilities, including whether BUFF should continue in its current form. We want to make sure that any decision is thoughtful, intentional, and aligned with the needs of our members and Boston’s larger urban forestry community. If you have ideas or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your patience and continued support as we work through this behind the scenes. We will share updates with the BUFF membership as soon as we have more information.
Sincerely,
Jerel Ferguson
Director of Community Outreach and Engagement

Our Mission
The mission of Boston Urban Forest Friends is to bring together people, organizations, and resources to expand awareness about trees and the public health benefits they provide, increase the equitable distribution of trees, and help Boston’s urban forest grow and thrive, advancing climate resiliency.
What We Do
- We believe all trees, whether public or private, are a public good. Boston’s urban tree canopy provides environmental, social, economic, and health benefits, but those benefits are not shared equally across all communities.
- In the face of climate change, green space is essential to building a healthier, more resilient Boston. Our work must center residents’ voices, reflect community concerns, and support local action.
- We are committed to diversity in our people, our partnerships, and our urban forest. We support education around trees and their connection to racial, environmental, and social justice.
- Resources, programs, and opportunities in urban forestry must help address long-standing inequities while expanding residential stewardship and workforce training, especially in communities of color and underrepresented communities.
- Building Boston’s urban forest requires collaboration among residents, community organizations, city departments, businesses, and foundations working toward a shared vision.
