INTERNSHIP ANNOUNCEMENT
Tree Care Summer Intern
Speak for the Trees is seeking a Tree Care Summer Intern (TCSI) to assist staff in watering and caring for trees planted by the organization and, in collaboration with the City of Boston, may be asked to water and care for additional trees managed by the city. They will have access to a company pickup truck outfitted with a watering tank, pump, and a trailer. In addition to caring for trees, they will assist in tracking trees and tree care activities and maintaining the condition, organization, and inventory of the organization’s tools and equipment. They will also assist with tree plantings and giveaway events and will assist in providing community training for community members and volunteers to learn about how to care for trees.
The TCSI will check in regularly with SFTT staff and participate in SFTT’s weekly meetings, including but not limited to all-staff meetings, for collaboration and to learn about the progress of other SFTT projects. Their work will be supported by current staff. The Tree Care Summer Intern will be under the management of the Community Tree Specialist and the Urban Tree Fellow.
Essential Functions:
- Regular watering of trees planted by the organization
- Tracking and reporting of trees watered
- Assisting with tree health evaluation
- Assisting at tree planting and giveaway events
- Assisting at volunteer tree stewardship events
- Regular maintenance of equipment, including, but not limited to, the pickup truck, watering tank, and tools
- Assess for risks and report any challenges encountered so as to work collaboratively to problem solve
Requirements:
- Ability to lift 50 lbs on a regular basis
- Experience and training in tree planting and basic tree care
- Currently a post-secondary student in a community college, university, or college OR has graduated from post-secondary school in past year (Associates, Bachelors, or Masters)
- Primary residence is in Massachusetts OR enrolled in a Massachusetts post-secondary school
Preferred, but not required:
- Valid Massachusetts driver’s license with a clean driving record
- Ability to communicate in one or more non-English languages commonly spoken in Boston preferred
Skills:
- Strong communication skills
- Commitment to tree equity and social, racial, and environmental justice
- Ability to take the initiative and be a self-starter
- Detailed-oriented and organized
Salary:
$18/hour. This position is a seasonal position 30-35 hours per week from May 19 through August 29.
